“In this economy,
Ferryman is another recent comic series that really seems to be hitting its stride lately like a marathoner with a sweet mid-race kick. Writer Marc Andreyko and artist Jonathan Wayshak have consistently topped themselves every month, each new issue offering a creepy new Ferryman who’s tossed into this tasty comic stew. The artwork is fantastic; it’s like giving your eyes a Hawaiian vacation. And the storyline about a group of supernatural bounty hunters collecting bargained souls for the devil is clever and very cool.
Ferryman Gideon Thorne is searching for a lead as he tries to track down the mysterious “Outcast” for Webster. While every step brings him closer to his elusive prey, he’s not the only one on the hunt. Gideon soon discovers that other Ferrymen are lurking about. But are these rivals looking to slap the cuffs on the “Outcast”, or are they gunning for Gideon?
Andreyko has maintained a nice balance in the first few issues of providing the reader with some back story while keeping the rest of the plot shrouded in secrecy. Every issue another piece snaps into the puzzle, providing another delicious layer to Andreyko’s excellent narrative lasagna.
The various Ferrymen are particularly well-conceived. Andreyko imbues each one with a distinctive personality even though most have had very little face time so far. While Gideon may be the star, his rivals don’t lag far behind. It’s Andreyko’s skilled characterizations which has been the greatest strength of the series to this point.
Wayshak’s interiors are stunning. They suck up attention like a greedy attention-starved two-year old. His art strongly reminds me of Bill Sienkiewicz’s work except with an exaggerated cartoony vibe to it. Almost anime, but with more menace. Comic panels don’t get much better than the double interior splash page Wayshak lays down in this issue. It’s impressive stuff, indeed.
Wayshak and Andreyko are polishing up quite a gem with Ferryman as they drop another excellent issue in the series.
Final Grade: 84 out of 100
