Promote an Underappreciated Author Day

Monday, June 30, 2008

There are so many writers out there today, that often many of the very best go unnoticed, their innovative work drowning under an ocean of books written by lesser lights. These writers consistently turn out fantastic novels that should be on the NY Times Bestseller lists, but instead are criminally underappreciated. It really is a shame, and I figured I'd do my part to shine some light on writers I feel deserve a greater spotlight.

Now first off a disclaimer, Charlie Huston isn't for everybody. His books are bloody, excessively violent and filled with heaping doses of profanity. So if this isn't your bag, you really do want to run the other way. Fast! However, if you enjoy some kick ass noir-styled goodness that hits you like a concussion, then Charlie is your man.

He currently has seven books available, all of which are highly recommended by me. His mystery trilogy, "Caught Stealing", "Six Bad Things", and "A Dangerous Man", features Hank Thompson, and is perfect for those who like hard-edged, action-packed, fast-paced thrillers. If vampire-noir urban fantasy sounds more appealing, then you want to check out the Joe Pitt Casebooks, "Already Dead", "No Dominion", and "Half the Blood of Brooklyn". Just as hard-edged, violent and action-packed as the Thompson trilogy, the Joe Pitt Casebooks also features the killer dialogue and wit that Huston's books are famous for. He also wrote the excellent standalone coming-of-age thriller, "The Shotgun Rule".

All of his books are a hell of a ride. There are fast-paced, edgy and filled with lots of bad things. Think "Pulp Fiction" with even more "Oh my God" moments!

So do yourself a favor, and pick up one of his books. I'm positive you won't be disappointed. If you want to learn more about Charlie Huston and his books, check out his killer website.

It's always good to see Huston getting some love. He's one of the most entertaining authors writing today, and for Urban Fantasy I don't think there's anybody better (maybe equally good, but not better).

RedEyedGhost,

Totally agree with Huston being one of the best writing in Urban Fantasy.
Always glad to meet other fans of his.

Reading Charlie's blog the other day, I just found it sad when he referred to himself as a low mid-list author. He really deserves to get better sales than that!
