In reviewing the first issue of Locke & Key, I stated that I expected big things to come from writer Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez in the future. Well, the second issue has hit newsstands, and it doesn't disappoint. This series is shaping up to be a really kickass ghost story with sharp, innovative writing and gorgeous visuals.
This issue concentrates the story on the youngest member of the Locke family, Bode. In his wanderings around his new home, Key House, he discovers a doorway which, when he steps through it, transforms him into a ghost. But that isn't the only odd thing Bode has discovered about Key House. While out in the grounds passing time, Bode hears a woman's voice echoing out of the well-house. On entering well-house, Bode discovers that she is in the well. Bode befriends her, and they converse with each other. She asks Bode to get her a few items which he complies with, dropping the items down the well to her.
Meanwhile, the imprisoned Sam Lesser, the murderer of the Locke family patriarch, Rendell, hears the same woman's voice coming from his toilet. She tells him she has brought him the key to his escape. When Sam checks the toilet, he finds the objects Bode had dropped down the well.
Hill's script is fantastic in this issue, even better than the first issue since it moves the story along, rather than setting it up. Rodriguez' artwork starts to own the story here, providing beautifully rendered and well-composed scenes. This is some amazing work from him. Together, Hill and Rodriguez are hitting on all cylinders here, providing a sublime story with beautiful visuals that has me dying to get my hands on the next issue.
